Nokia E75 Review of Hardware
I’ve been playing with the Nokia E75 for a few days and now it’s time for my review of the hardware. It’s not a phone I’d consider buying, but I was given the opportunity to trial it from Nokia. I’ll let you know what I think of the physical aspects and continue with upcoming posts of my usage experience and thoughts.
Brief. The Nokia E75 in one sentence can quickly be described as a feature-packed Eseries device with slide-out full keyboard along with a numeric keypad.
Build
Nokia Eseries devices are usually known for its excellent build quality. The Nokia E75 seems to follow suit… until I open the slider. Let me explain.
With the slider closed, the front of the phone is smooth and glossy. It feels good to touch. The stainless steel battery cover is the most striking part on the back of the phone. It goes along very well with the rest of the phone. Without sliding it open, the Nokia E75’s build quality is just what I’d expect in an Eseries device. However, it’s a different story when sliding the Nokia E75 open.
The keyboard and the panel surrounding it are rough to touch, unlike the smooth surface on the front of the Nokia E75. It gives the impression of cheap materials. The outer edge of the phone is also not flushed with the panel, protruding a little bit. If the outer edge was thinner, it it could possibly cut someone. If you were bored, you can try pulling the edge away from the phone. It looks possible!
The good news is that I found no problems with the slide mechanism. You hear nice clicking sounds when opening and closing the Nokia E75.
Display
The display size is another reason why I wouldn’t buy this phone. The Nokia E75 has a 2.4in screen with 320×240 resolution. With such a small screen, the information and images appear sharp. I prefer a bigger screen.
Buttons
The top two rows of buttons on the Nokia E75 are crammed together resulting in frequent accidental presses. If you had problems with the Nokia E71’s qwerty buttons, you’ll have problems with the top 8 buttons on the Nokia E75’s numeric keypad.
The full qwerty keyboard underneath is most likely why potential buyers are interested in this phone. The buttons are big and symbols are easily accessible. I get a pretty good feedback when pressing the buttons, but I wish they weren’t so flat. A little bump on each key would be nicer in my opinion. Nevertheless, I can write emails and text messages on this phone much faster than the Nokia 5800 or the Nokia N85. Another complaint I have is that my thumbs sometimes touch the top-side of the phone whenever I press the R, T, Y, and U buttons. It’s not a big annoyance, but something you might want to look out for.
Side buttons. On the side of the Nokia E75, there are four buttons. Nokia added a dedicated camera button that has been usually omitted in Eseries devices. The other three are volume and voice buttons. If you press and hold the camera buton, the camera application opens up and you’re ready to start shooting. If you press and hold the record button on the main display, voice dialing gets activated and you can say a contact to to dial.
Power. The power button is usually found on top of my previous Nokia Nseries and Eseries phones, but not on the Nokia E75. That function has been aligned with the red or hang-up button on the front of the phone. Whether it is a good or bad idea is up to you.
On my previous phones, I usually press the red button to go back to the main screen from wherever I am. I tend to press it more than once. When that happens on the E75, the power option window appears. It took some time for me to get used to.
One thing I like about power/red button implementation is that I can lock the keypad by pressing the red button, down, then OK. I found it easier than pressing the left soft-key then asterisk. Of course, a dedicated lock button like the one on the Nokia 5800 is the best solution.
Speakers
The loudspeaker on the Nokia E75 is loud enough. I can hear my callers and songs pretty well. The quality isn’t that good if you want to listen to music on loudspeaker. I can hear the lyrics, but also hear crackles on songs with lots of bass (the type of songs I listen to).
I don’t like the placement of the speakers on the back of the phone. The volume noticeably decreases when you pick it up from the desk.
The Nokia E75 also has a 3.5mm audio jack so you can insert your standard earphones if you don’t like the ones included. I rarely listen to music on the go, and it is not one of my top phone usage. I’m afraid you’ll have to find another reviewer to tell you about the audio quality of the Nokia E75 when using earphones.
Connections
There are two rubber flap doors on the left side of the Nokia E75 covering the micro USB and microSD ports. They seem to do a great job locking and staying in place. It should be noted that the E75 does not support TV-out.
Another cool thing about the Nokia E75 is the ability to charge the phone via the micro-USB port or the standard power port.
Hardware Conclusion
The full Qwerty slide-out keyboard enables me to write emails and text messages faster than any previous Nokia phones I’ve played with, including the Nokia E71. I think it looks and feels great when slid closed, but not when the Qwerty keyboard is showing.
The Nokia E75 is clearly not the right phone for me, but it could be for many other people who makes email and messaging a top priority. I feel like it has too many buttons. If I had to pick between the Nokia E71 and Nokia E75 based solely on form factor, I’d choose the E71.
On upcoming posts, I’ll cover some of the features and actual usage experiences from the Nokia E75. I’ll give you a small taste: the 3mp camera is actually good!

How To Change Fonts On Your Symbian Phone
One thing that Symbian desperately needs is the ability for users to easily manage fonts. I’ve recently reviewed a few Samsung feature phones and all three had the option to choose from 3 different fonts already installed in the phone. Since Symbian is a smartphone operating system, it surely can’t be that difficult to add this feature, can it? The good news is that no, it’s not.
To manage the fonts that your phone uses, you’ll need two applications. The first, FontRouter LT, will need to be signed. You can either use OpenSigned to do this, or use our walkthrough of how to sign unsigned apps for your Symbian-powered smartphone. The second app, FontRouterMan, is already signed, and provides an interface to the changes that FontRouter LT makes to your system. Once you have installed both applications to the internal memory on your phone, you can then install fonts easily. I have tested both applications on the Nokia N79, E63, and 5800 XpressMusic, so you shouldn’t have any trouble installing and using them on your phone.
You can use any .ttf font on your Symbian-powered smartphone, but make sure that the extension is ‘.ttf’ and not ‘.TTF’. Apparently, there is a difference, as I discovered. You can get free fonts here, and then simply use any file manager (including the built-in one) to put the font files in C:/data/Fonts on your phone.
Now, open FontRouterMan, and press Options, Open Installed Fonts. Choose the C:/ drive, and you’ll be presented with a list of available fonts. Simply choose the one you would like to use, then press ‘Exit’, and reboot your phone. You will now see the font used in place of the default system font!
FontRouterMan also allows you to fine-tune the font with various settings. Each time you adjust these settings, you’ll need to exit FontRouterMan and then reboot your phone to see the changes. Obviously, this can be a big hassle, but unfortunately, there is no way to preview how a font adjustment will look on your phone. You can also set FontRouterMan to ‘disabled’ to revert to the system default. Here’s a quick guide as to what each setting does:
ZoomRatio – Adjusts the overall size of the font throughout the system.
Chroma - Related to anti-aliased fonts
FontStyle - Allows you to choose from normal, italics, bold, or bold and italics
Y Adjust – Changes how tall the characters are
CharGapAdj – Adjusts the gap between characters in words
LineGapAdj - Adjusts the line spacing
GDR Support - Support for GDR fonts
BitmapType - Changes how the font is rendered on your phone
FontMetrics - Changes how the font is rendered on your phone
CharMetrics - Changes how the individual characters are rendered on your phone
LogLevel - Adjusts the level of information stored in the log
ZoomMaxSize - Adjusts the maximum zoom
ZoomMinSize - Adjusts the minimum zoom
Have you changed the fonts on your phone? Share a screenshot to show off your font, and let us know where to download it at! I’m anxious to see the various fun fonts that everyone chooses!

Nokia Messaging Now Supports Hotmail
Nokia Messaging, Nokia’s consumer email service which was launched at Nokia World 2008, now supports Microsoft Windows Live Hotmail.
Nokia Messaging already support Yahoo! Mail, Gmail, AOL Mail and thousands of other email providers.
The new version of Nokia Messaging also comes with a number of additional enhancements:
* Support for Windows Live Hotmail email addresses
* Support for HTML-formatted emails
* Advanced email server settings configuration - http://email.nokia.com
* Support for 18 S60 devices in 17 languages
* Client and service performance improvements
In addition to the support for Windows Live Hotmail my other favourite new feature is support for HTML formatted email! This is a convenient feature since so much of the email I receive are newsletters or just HTML formatted email.
In order to take advantage of these new features you need to download the new client. You can add Windows Live Hotmail accounts but you will receive a message in your Hotmail inbox prompting you to upgrade your email client.
Just go to Nokia Messaging to either sign up, if you are not already using this service, or send an SMS push for the download link.
Alternatively, follow the instructions in the email you received when you set up the Hotmail account, or just point your browser on your Nokia device to http://email.nokia.com/ota
Once you have upgraded the client you will see a Hotmail branded email inbox and can take advantage of HMTL support and the other new features.
Nokia Mesaging is available at email.nokia.com

Nokia's E60, E61, and E70 E-series mobile business phones
Looks like Nokia's announced their new E60, E61, and E70 3G (WCDMA) phones with WiFi and mobile mail targeting mobile business users (yes, it's got GoodLink, Nokia Business Center, Seven Always-On, Visto Mobile, and BlackBerry Connect support). All the Series 60 Es run on Symbian OS 9.1 and will support advanced voice services such as Push-To-Talk and SIP allowing companies to integrate these phones into their Avaya or Cisco IP PBX (think 4-digit dialing and assisted call answering).
The E60 candybar is optimized for voice and targets GSM 900 / 1800 / 1900 and WCDMA2100 networks while the E61 takes a shot off the Motorola Q's bow and includes all the IP telephony functions but is optimized for mobile email and operates in quad-band GSM and WCDMA 2100 networks. The E70 is their enterprise all-in-one messaging device and will be released in two flavas: one for Europe and Asia and another for the Americas. Available in the first quarter of 2006 worldwide priced between €350 and €450. This is a big deal for Nokia—more pics after the jump.

Nokia E61 Games
When it comes to the Nokia E61, it's hard to get a better phone for playing games. There are so many options for games to play on that phone, but that's not the best thing. The most important issue to most people is that they have superior graphics and sound.
One of the games that these dedicated gamers like to play is I Hate Guns, 3rd edition. The game is not about guns, but about fighting and martial arts. It's full of action and surprises, which helps keep it interesting and enjoyable. You can also use a lot of different tactics to fight hoards of aggressive enemies are smaller groups and individuals.
With the options that you have, there's always something that you can do. There are six different stages and then the final battle, so it's something that a person can keep playing for a while and won't be over so quickly that you feel like you wasted your money by buying it. Another advantage to this game is that it has a great storyline. It's not just about action, but also about a plot and a reason that the main character hates guns. There's a lot of choices, and that helps to keep gamers interested in what they've bought to play in their free time. Looking for software? Check out our Nokia E61 software section for more great deals on downloadable content!

Download Nokia E70 Games
With the Nokia E70 a person can enjoy great call quality and a lot of features that they wouldn't get with some other phones. That being the case, a lot of people buy these phones. Some of them don't even know how much the phone will do when it comes to playing games. They just use it for calls and text messages, and they're missing out on many other options. Looking for software? Check out our Nokia E70 software section for more great deals on downloadable content!
For people who enjoy gaming, though, and want to have something fun to play on their phone, there are few better games than Dreamway. It's a cartoony game when it comes to graphics, but it's also a great racing game, full of action.
There are seven different tracks to run on, nine different bonuses, seven different cars to choose from, and three difficulty levels. That's a lot to pick from and it makes the game far more enjoyable and worth the money than it would be if it only had one car and one track. You don't even have to play the game in English, as six other languages are supported. You can customize a lot of it and make it just for you, which also helps to make the game a better choice for those who really like to race.

E61i vs E61: Two Smart and Efficient Warriors of Nokia E-Series
The Nokia E-Series smart phones are well-known for their business oriented applications that come embedded with the mobility in communication. These phones are very popular among business and corporate users, as it allows them to be connected all the time from anywhere. It can be said that high-end smartphones help the users to mobilise the work and optimise the productivity.
While availing the E-series phone, I usually see users getting confused over the Nokia E61 and Nokia E61i. Well, after reading the strong portfolio of these mobile phones, one would come to a conclusion that both are the best with a difference of the built-in camera. The Nokia E61i is enriched with the camera function, while Nokia E61 beholds more advanced connectivity features and massive internal memory, compared to the E61i.
The other common feature of the E61 and E61i in context to multimedia capabilities includes a music player and Java embedded games. The candy-bar styled Nokia E61 and Nokia E61i phones support high-end connectivity features that include support for quad-band network, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, WCDMA, USB, WLAN and HSCSD. With the help of HTML and XHTML, one can browse the internet and explore the full potential of mobile browsing.
Apart from that, both mobile phones with high-profile features are backed with an ergonomic keypad and a user-friendly interface. The Nokia E611 and E61i hold the best features that inculcate IP telephony functionalities and business tools.
Lastly, if you want to capture your fondest memories, then you must get acquainted with E61i. Whereas for advanced connectivity features and memory storage, you can opt for the E61.
