I’ve been playing with the Nokia E75 for a few days and now it’s time for my review of the hardware. It’s not a phone I’d consider buying, but I was given the opportunity to trial it from Nokia. I’ll let you know what I think of the physical aspects and continue with upcoming posts of my usage experience and thoughts.
Brief. The Nokia E75 in one sentence can quickly be described as a feature-packed Eseries device with slide-out full keyboard along with a numeric keypad.
Build
Nokia Eseries devices are usually known for its excellent build quality. The Nokia E75 seems to follow suit… until I open the slider. Let me explain.
With the slider closed, the front of the phone is smooth and glossy. It feels good to touch. The stainless steel battery cover is the most striking part on the back of the phone. It goes along very well with the rest of the phone. Without sliding it open, the Nokia E75’s build quality is just what I’d expect in an Eseries device. However, it’s a different story when sliding the Nokia E75 open.
The keyboard and the panel surrounding it are rough to touch, unlike the smooth surface on the front of the Nokia E75. It gives the impression of cheap materials. The outer edge of the phone is also not flushed with the panel, protruding a little bit. If the outer edge was thinner, it it could possibly cut someone. If you were bored, you can try pulling the edge away from the phone. It looks possible!
The good news is that I found no problems with the slide mechanism. You hear nice clicking sounds when opening and closing the Nokia E75.
Display
The display size is another reason why I wouldn’t buy this phone. The Nokia E75 has a 2.4in screen with 320×240 resolution. With such a small screen, the information and images appear sharp. I prefer a bigger screen.
Buttons
The top two rows of buttons on the Nokia E75 are crammed together resulting in frequent accidental presses. If you had problems with the Nokia E71’s qwerty buttons, you’ll have problems with the top 8 buttons on the Nokia E75’s numeric keypad.
The full qwerty keyboard underneath is most likely why potential buyers are interested in this phone. The buttons are big and symbols are easily accessible. I get a pretty good feedback when pressing the buttons, but I wish they weren’t so flat. A little bump on each key would be nicer in my opinion. Nevertheless, I can write emails and text messages on this phone much faster than the Nokia 5800 or the Nokia N85. Another complaint I have is that my thumbs sometimes touch the top-side of the phone whenever I press the R, T, Y, and U buttons. It’s not a big annoyance, but something you might want to look out for.
Side buttons. On the side of the Nokia E75, there are four buttons. Nokia added a dedicated camera button that has been usually omitted in Eseries devices. The other three are volume and voice buttons. If you press and hold the camera buton, the camera application opens up and you’re ready to start shooting. If you press and hold the record button on the main display, voice dialing gets activated and you can say a contact to to dial.
Power. The power button is usually found on top of my previous Nokia Nseries and Eseries phones, but not on the Nokia E75. That function has been aligned with the red or hang-up button on the front of the phone. Whether it is a good or bad idea is up to you.
On my previous phones, I usually press the red button to go back to the main screen from wherever I am. I tend to press it more than once. When that happens on the E75, the power option window appears. It took some time for me to get used to.
One thing I like about power/red button implementation is that I can lock the keypad by pressing the red button, down, then OK. I found it easier than pressing the left soft-key then asterisk. Of course, a dedicated lock button like the one on the Nokia 5800 is the best solution.
Speakers
The loudspeaker on the Nokia E75 is loud enough. I can hear my callers and songs pretty well. The quality isn’t that good if you want to listen to music on loudspeaker. I can hear the lyrics, but also hear crackles on songs with lots of bass (the type of songs I listen to).
I don’t like the placement of the speakers on the back of the phone. The volume noticeably decreases when you pick it up from the desk.
The Nokia E75 also has a 3.5mm audio jack so you can insert your standard earphones if you don’t like the ones included. I rarely listen to music on the go, and it is not one of my top phone usage. I’m afraid you’ll have to find another reviewer to tell you about the audio quality of the Nokia E75 when using earphones.
Connections
There are two rubber flap doors on the left side of the Nokia E75 covering the micro USB and microSD ports. They seem to do a great job locking and staying in place. It should be noted that the E75 does not support TV-out.
Another cool thing about the Nokia E75 is the ability to charge the phone via the micro-USB port or the standard power port.
Hardware Conclusion
The full Qwerty slide-out keyboard enables me to write emails and text messages faster than any previous Nokia phones I’ve played with, including the Nokia E71. I think it looks and feels great when slid closed, but not when the Qwerty keyboard is showing.
The Nokia E75 is clearly not the right phone for me, but it could be for many other people who makes email and messaging a top priority. I feel like it has too many buttons. If I had to pick between the Nokia E71 and Nokia E75 based solely on form factor, I’d choose the E71.
On upcoming posts, I’ll cover some of the features and actual usage experiences from the Nokia E75. I’ll give you a small taste: the 3mp camera is actually good!

Nokia's E60, E61, and E70 E-series mobile business phones
Looks like Nokia's announced their new E60, E61, and E70 3G (WCDMA) phones with WiFi and mobile mail targeting mobile business users (yes, it's got GoodLink, Nokia Business Center, Seven Always-On, Visto Mobile, and BlackBerry Connect support). All the Series 60 Es run on Symbian OS 9.1 and will support advanced voice services such as Push-To-Talk and SIP allowing companies to integrate these phones into their Avaya or Cisco IP PBX (think 4-digit dialing and assisted call answering).
The E60 candybar is optimized for voice and targets GSM 900 / 1800 / 1900 and WCDMA2100 networks while the E61 takes a shot off the Motorola Q's bow and includes all the IP telephony functions but is optimized for mobile email and operates in quad-band GSM and WCDMA 2100 networks. The E70 is their enterprise all-in-one messaging device and will be released in two flavas: one for Europe and Asia and another for the Americas. Available in the first quarter of 2006 worldwide priced between €350 and €450. This is a big deal for Nokia—more pics after the jump.

Nokia E71 Review
Nokia E71 gsm handheld is designed with business individuals in mind, so this phone comes with the main feature of the ESeries, the QWERTY keyboard and the fast operation of the internet and LAN based networking. It also have a conferencing camera built on the front side of the phone to do your online based meetings and conference.
Packed with WiFi, HSPDA and a NMEA 0183 GPS satellite receiver, you can be sure that this phone is one of the best phones for business. The phone casing is quite slim and seems like a modified Blackberry Bold from the sides. And to add to that, it also supports Blackberry devices. With a 128MB RAM and a whooping 256MB ROM drive, you can be sure that this phone is quite faster compared to other E-Series smartphones. It weighs around 120 grams with the battery inside and is powered by a 328 MHz processor speed with a symbian OS 9.2 firmware. The top part of the exterior is covered by a chrome casing which really promises us a sturdy and robust performance for a long time to come.
The wide screen 320×240, 24 bit pixels TFT screen is well optimized with a nice and even back light for a reliable usage. It internal antenna also supports the quad band GPRS and EDGE so whether your state or country have a 3G connection or not, you can be pretty relaxed knowing that at least you will still have the fast performance that EDGE delivers. It also has a 8GB hot swap MicroSD and comes with a main 3.2 mega pixels camera and a LED mobile flash. Infrared is also built in beside Bluetooth, Fast 480mbits USB, 54mbits WiFi and WLAN connectivity. It also comes with a BURY hardware for the car which is quite handy and something almost all other models lack.
The camera supports MPEG 4 and 3GPP uninterrupted recording and the quality of the pictures and video is quite well, almost better than N73 Music Edition. However this phone lacks the analog Tv out and audio out capability which is understandable in a ESeries phone. The navigation is quite easy specially with a 5 way directional navigation button on the center and since the phone’s operating is quite fast, it should really be an outstanding experience for any Nokia E71 user. Nokia E71 carries a Li-On battery which is a major improvement than its predecessor Nokia E61i. Since this comes with a fast Wifi, the battery seemed to be one of the main concern of the R&D division of Nokia and they have really done a great job so far. With a 1500 mAh battery, the life of Nokia E71 is promising and very impressive! 3G does work well and the WiFi works like a charm on this phone. It does lack USB charging though, which is one of the weakness of this phone. The calendar is quite ordinary and nothing special have been developed in this version. This phone is also a lot thinner than the Blackberry Curve, Nokia N95 8gb and the Apple iPhone! It also supports IMAP emails and has an inbuilt mono microphone and loudspeaker. The usual audio output is stereo though obviously!
AT&T is heavily rumored to get this contract which might be a very good news for all you ATT user base. It is not confirmed, but most probably a 90% chance of it ending up with ATT. Trust me, its way better than the Blackberry Curve and almost as fast as the iPhone and since it comes with the Symbian OS 9.2, it really is a treat to enjoy!
Here are some additional screenshots of the Nokia E71 front and back, also compared with the iPhone and the Nokia N95 8gb.

Nokia E72 Reviews
Are you planning to buy a new smartphone for yourself? Are you always looking for the best value for your money when it comes to your favorite gadget – the smartphone? The brand new Nokia E72 phone, presently priced around $489 -$499 bucks, can be the perfect device you are looking for with its perfect combination of efficiency, value and fun.
Set to be the next member of the E-Series business handsets family, the Nokia E72 will probably be launched late August or sometime before the second week of September. With the E71 still being the center of attention for all QWERTY lovers around the world, much anticipation rocked the E-Series-o-holics when the E72 was first talked about being developed by the world’s number one phone manufacturer Nokia.
Everyone loved the solid built Nokia E71 all over and all admired how nicely its QWERTY keypad was positioned when typing with that PDA smartphone for the first time. In fact it is listed as the best in its class by Wired Magazine and it is priced at around. Nokia E71 is one of the most successful PDA type phone that Nokia ever produced and we all wanted to see an “upgrade” to that! The Nokia E72 is just that if not more, it is an an E71 which – wisely upgraded!
Nokia E72 Features :
The beautifully shaped Nokia E72 is the perfect smartphone or PDA for any business individual on the go. Only 128 grams in size and with a form thickness of 10mm, the Nokia E72 is built to last years. The four corners are rounded quite a bit and the keys are positioned a bit higher than its predecessor Nokia E71.
Don’t be fooled by its E-Series tag though as this phone is much personal user friendly as much as it is business oriented in nature. It comes with an one touch auto focus compatible 5 MP (5 mega pixels or 2592 pixels by 1944 pixels) camera with a Flash which makes it the perfect smart phone or PDA for any kind of multimedia photography. It can adjust and tweak itself when you are snapping moving objects, thus, eliminating blurred images altogether.
The VGA recording quality of the Nokia E72 camera is similar to that of N97 and allows you to record moving objects at a rate of 15 frames/sec with a max dimension of 640×480 pixels. It can auto adjust the video settings for maximum quality output.
E72 is compatible with Microsoft Exchange E-Mail systems and the Lotus Notes Traveler which makes it a powerful device to manage all your e-mail accounts and their respective attachments centrally from your E72 PDA device. In general all POP3 and IMAP based e-mail networks should work with E72’s email client. It also supports HTML mail, multiple E-mail accounts integration, forwards, etc.
Massive power savings are ensured when you are using this E-Series business device, the E72. It can easily last over 6 and a half hours with constant GPS navigation turned on and it can last over 5 hours if you surfing the web constantly using the E72. It can also serve you with nearly 8 hours of video playback, well over 12 hours of talktime and over 32 hours of music playback when listened through its accessory headphone. In WiFi standby mode it operates well over 110 hours straight without the need for any additional battery charge.

E71 Vs E72 Vs E75
Experience the full speed of this 3.5G HSDPA internet data device enabling you up to 10.6 mbps of connectivity speed at any given time. Also offers HSUPA (at 2mbps), Wireless LAN (WLAN is based on the widely accepted IEEE 802.11b/g model), EDGE, GPRS and WAP connectivity.
It supports high speed A2DP EDR connectivity for its included Bluetooth device connections and also supports High Speed USB, and stereo 3.5mm audio jacks for easy music inputs.
The powerful Series 60 Internet browser of E72 symbian OS supports nearly all types of websites and blogs (including mine!) which means no more “small screen” type rendering whatsoever. It can display and render flash based graphics and websites without the need of other plugins or software.

The Optical Navi Keys of E72 are tailor made to suit the overall “rich superstar” appearance of the smartphone. They are easy to find with your fingers which allows you to control them without looking at the keypad. The smart yet unusual shape of the left and right Navi keys are somewhat quite different than any of the buttons of this device or any other.
The wide 320×240 QVGA TFT screen is bright and it suits the 114 x 58.3 x 10.1 mm monoblock dimension of the phone. It weighs only about 128 grams which is comparatively lighter than any of its competitors.
Dedicated one touch access keys to functions like Home, Calendar, USB, E-Mail, Volume etc. adds to the overall friendly navigational structure of the phone. In general, the E-Series trend is well implemented on this phone.

E72 Specs
This PDA smartphone also supports bluetooth connectivity and file transfers to any paired or authorized bluetooth device, it also supports accelerometer based mobile applications and games with or without bluetooth.
The standard package comes with a built in space of 4GB in it and over 250MB of internal phone memory which ensures that you will be able to run games and applications without exceeding the memory limit.

E72 Memory Card Slot
The E-Series based quadband E72 works with all the 850/900/1800/1900 EGSM networks and depending on your phone version, it will work with all types of HSDPA networks.
A number of new and innovative smart functions such as bulk SMS deletion, undo deletion, Text-to-Speech reader, concatenated or long messages (10 messages chained into 1 without breaking off) support etc are all built in with the E72 to make it more efficient.

E72 Nokia
E72 comes with built in Nokia applications such as Windows Live Instant Messenger, OVI contacts, Microsoft ActiveSync, Nokia OVI Maps, Nokia Mobile VPN client, new incoming E-Mail notifications etc. Also, it comes with a FM Radio built in and can operate through PTT (Push to Talk) technology provided that you network provider offers it.
E72 supports audio streaming (Last.FM) and video streaming (like YouTube) sites which ensures you to keep yourself connected with your favorite online internet radio stations, video sites and social networks (Facebook) easily.

As you can see in the above pics, E72 is a blend of all the right spices that can really make it one of the best smartphone device in the market.
This wide screen phone is shiny yet rugged on its exterior, comes with a the nicely protected 5MP camera, a smartly designed QWERTY keypad and a built in 4GB hotswap memory card makes E72 the beast of the market (so to speak). A soon to be the ’star performer’ of the Nokia E-Series family surely can make this device a great hit in the market from the get go.
In my honest opinion, after looking at the options and reading through all the technical facts/features/design etc I can honestly say that I am really impressed with this device.

E72 Design
I totally recommend the E72 smartphone to anyone seeking to get the right mixture of features and someone who wants it all: Efficiency, Multimedia, and Design. Whether you are using network providers like AT&T Wireless, Orange Mobile UK, Telenor, Verizon Wireless, Cingular, Vodafone, Hutch, Telia Sonera, T-Mobile etc or anything else, it is the E72 that should be the phone of your choice.

The question of an upgrade for existing E61 users is a little bit more difficult. Beyond the camera there’s little difference in the physicality of the E61 to the E61i. The built in software changes are, for the most part, included in the firmware updates available to end-users of the E61 using Nokia Software Update. As a replacement unit for a damaged Nokia E61, by all means take the later model, but there’s no real need to lust after that extra ‘i’ just yet.
